Opulence, Affluence and Blatancy.

Padlet of Promises

by Odeny J. Onduru

The season is ripe, prolific, and snacky

At the sight of helicopters, gas guzzlers and other locomotives

People yell, squeal, yelp, howl, and hiss

Soon, they are subdued by the elegance and affluence of their leader

They recoil and mute as they reverently wait for his bunches of promises

With eloquence and assertiveness, he pews out all manner of goodies

The construction of Mahare to Kanyamruaka Road

The clean water connection from Kagilo to Peninsula

The bursary provision to all school-going children

The assurance that little children will no longer cross the fierce Odora river to school

The resurrection of women's chama activities

For him the padlet promises all

The seemingly insightful, and the excited crowd responds with chaotic claps and shouts

Scorched in the day's sun and drenched in their own sweat,

they hurl and sing praises for the leader

The promises are illustrious of change they anticipated for decades

Now, the long-awaited moment comes

The leader has to bulge out his political muscles

For the audience, this is when the pestle meets the mortar

Helter-skelter people run to join the queues

They scamper and elbow one another; for the gathering would not be complete without being

"Untied"

Soon the bodabodas' horns engulf the atmosphere as the riders demonstrate their riding prowess in order to save lives

Lives have to be saved first!

The earth gulps and vomits blood, fed by the mouth gaping cuts and bruises

The helicopter's engine rents the air as the guzzlers snake out of the scene

The facility's gate is agape, bodabodas fill the space

Doctor, she is losing her breath

Doctor, he is recently married

Doctor, he is a total orphan please help out

The Doctor runs without precision to retrieve, to escape...either or

Ooooh, machines are down, power is disconnected, there is no water, what can I do? No...

The R.I.P scribbled on the locally done cross describes his short life on the earth

Zaq Onyile Born: 2001 Died: 2022

The  padlet is not yet full

The leader promises to mortgage the family

"It was a worthy course, dying in support of a good leader. He is a hero;

I am indebted to the family forever..."

With a promise to defray all the burial-related expenses he ends his long speech

And waits for another five year-year circuits to offer another padlet of promises

The audience run berserk at this point; emotional praise laden the air
